Brooklyn Museum Brooklyn Museum is an art museum in Brooklyn, New York City borough of Brooklyn. It covers 5,60,000 square feet (52,000 square meters), is the third-largest in New York City’s physical area, and houses an art collection of around 500 000 objects. It is located in the Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Flatbush, and Park Slope neighborhoods of Brooklyn and was established in 1895. The Beaux-Arts structure, which McKim, Mead, and White created, was the most extensive collection of art around the globe. Due to vast improvements, The museum struggled initially to keep its building and collection but was rehabilitated by the latter half of the 20th century. One of the most significant areas of the museum includes antiquities, including its collection of Egyptian antiquities that span more than 3000 years: European, African, Oceanic, and Japanese art form important antiquities collections. American art is well represented, beginning with the time of the colonial era. Artists featured in the collection are Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, Norman Rockwell, Winslow Homer, Edgar Degas, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Max Weber. The museum also houses an exhibit called the Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden, which features architecture salvaged across New York City.
Brooklyn Museum’s history’s origins extend to its founding in 1823 by Augustus Graham of the Brooklyn Apprentices Library located in Brooklyn Heights. The library was moved to its current Brooklyn Lyceum building on Washington Street in 1841. The following year they merged to create the Brooklyn Institute, which offered exhibits of sculpture and painting and also lectures on various topics. Under the direction of Director Franklin Hooper, Institute leaders transformed into The Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and began the process of establishing their plans for the Brooklyn Museum. The museum was a part of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, which included the Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Brooklyn Botanic Garden, as well as the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, until the 1970s, when the museums became separate.

Collections
Brooklyn Museum Brooklyn Museum has been building many Egyptian objects since the early part of the 20th century. Both collections were acquired from other sources, including the American Egyptianologist Charles Edwin Wilbour. Their descendants have also given his library be its Wilbour Library of Egyptology and other objects uncovered from museum-sponsored archeological excavations. The Egyptian collection comprises items ranging from statues, including the famous “Bird Lady” terra cotta statue, to papyrus records (among other things among them, the Brooklyn Papyrus).
